Someone commented on my News in 90 yesterday
and said I "showed a very Democrat liberal bias"
Thankfully, someone responded and said, "oh shut up - he is being totally bipartisan"
And that got me thinking.
I am creating a model of a news department in KCTV, that I hope to share with every other news desert here in America. My belief is by informing America about the news of the day by telling them about local stories and national news in a newscast that is created locally by the people who live locally, we can keep it of the people, by the people and for the people.
Of course, I have my political leanings. We all do. In my line of work, I try to be as fair to the other side as I can be, but every once in a while I miss the mark.
And while I might miss the mark every now and again, I still do my best to present the news of the day without passion or prejudice, despite my political leanings. In this day in age, it's not the easiest thing to do, but I think on balance I hit the mark more often than not.
But when I own the station that is reporting the news, my news judgment will be colored by every reporter who works for the station. It is in that situation even more difficult to maintain a fair outlook on the news of that day.
That's why I want to have reporters who don't live in our newsroom, but rather live in our community. I want our reporters to live in Gilchrist, Merrill and Malin. I want them to understand the workings of Chiloquin, and be able to tell the stories of Bonanza because that is where they live, and that is where they call home.
Everyone has a cell phone these days. Grabbing a few videos of a car accident or cat in a tree and sending them to KCTV isn't as hard as it once was. If they can write a script and voice a story to go with those pictures, so much the better. Because it is their voice telling the stories of Klamath County and their eyes that can give us the best details.
And while for now I am one-man band making the news of the day into News in 90 and doing the best that I can, when the news is created by our community for our community in our community, the stories we present will have the perspective of your friends and neighbors and maybe then you won't be so quick judge them on their liberal bias, and maybe you might just learn a bit more about our community.
